What is Gout? Explain Its Causes, Symptoms and Home Remedies
Gout is a painful metabolic disorder. In this condition, there is an accumulation of uric acid in the cartilages of the joints. It is accompanied by inflammation in the joints as well. The first line of attack of gout starts from the toe where it causes swelling followed by painful inflammation. This pain, swelling and inflammation then radiates towards ankles, knees, joints of hands and feet, elbow and the wrists.
Causes
Excessive production of uric acid during breakdown of chemicals known as purines and the resultant deposition of this excessive uric acid in the joints of body is the major cause for gout. Under normal conditions, the uric acid is expelled from the body along with urine. But due to some physical abnormalities in the internal system of the body, the uric acid is not eliminated from the body. And it results in the production of crystals which are as sharp as needles. This in turn leads to swel.. ling and inflammation in the joints. Some other causes which may also lead to gout are excessive physical activity, trauma, and suppression of natural urges of the body, constant travelling or waking up in the night.
Symptoms
Common features of gout which confirm its occurrence in the body include redness and swelling in the joints accompanied by tenderness, pain in the joints which normally starts at night, feelings of fever and thirst, pricking pain the joints, changing color of the skin and itchiness and burning sensation.

Known by the name Vatrakt, gout is mainly caused as a result of vatta dosha in the body. The raktdhatu is affected due to imbalance in the vatta dosha and starts depositing in the joints. Some causes of this imbalance are consumption of heavy, sour, spicy, alkaline, salty or penetrating foods.

You must drink lots of water to flush out toxins from the body which is the main reason for occurrence of gout. Enhance intake of cumin, ginger, garlic, cardamom, fennel, coriander and cinnamon to relieve pain and inflammation. Always include steamed or boiled vegetables or the vegetable broth in your diet as these are digested easily by the body.
Also include seasonal fruits, wholegrain bread and cereals in your diet plan. Never go for high-protein diet, salty foods, fried foods or sour foods, plus alcohol, tobacco and red meat. Dairy products and particularly yogurt must be avoided to prevent pain and swelling in the joints. Remain away from cold and wet places. Keep yourself warm. Go for light exercises such as walking.
Effective Home Remedies to treat Gout
Use lukewarm sesame oil to massage your joints. Apply ointment prepared by boiling rose petals in vinegar on the affected joints 3-4 times daily. Have fresh garlic cloves with water on an empty stomach each morning.
