Constipation and Ayurveda
Constipation can be defined as the in-evacuation of the bowel in a single go within twenty minutes of waking up.
There are many views on constipation. According to some, if a person finds difficulty in evacuating the bowel less than three to four times a week, it comes under constipation. In another view, if a person passes hard, dry stools that are difficult to evacuate also comes under constipation.
According to an estimate, about 70 % of the world’s population has experienced constipation at least once in their lifetime.
Causes of constipation
There are multiple causes of constipation. Frequently encountered factors that cause constipation are as below.
- Low fluids consumption
- Lack of physical activities
- Certain medication
- Low fibre diet
- Ignoring the urge for bowel movement
- Medical conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and enlarged prostate etc.
- Pregnancy
- Indigestion
- Less food consumption
- Abuse of purgatives and laxatives
- Old age
